Monitoring Ireland’s Greenways

MOVE Project (Mobility and Outdoor Value Estimates)

Since spring 2024, we’ve been working with AECOM, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Fáilte Ireland to understand how people use Ireland’s Greenways, the impact they have, and what they mean for local communities and individual well-being.

The project looks at five Greenways – the Great Western, Limerick, South East, Old Rail Trail (Mullingar–Athlone) and Waterford. Using a mix of surveys and counts, the MOVE Project gathers meaningful insights that help guide planning and investment in active travel.

Our role

At Interactions, we’ve been out on the ground across 21 sites, running surveys in all sorts of weather. Our field team meets thousands of Greenway users four times a year, always bringing a friendly and professional approach. The data we collect feeds directly into the MOVE dashboard, giving planners a strong evidence base.

What we’re finding

  • Over 170,000 people were active on the Greenways during the survey periods.
  • The Old Rail Trail Greenway came out on top for usage, followed by the Waterford Greenway.
  • Greenways are more than tourist spots – one in three people arrive on foot, showing how central they are to everyday community life.
  • Most people use them for leisure or exercise, with many spending more than an hour outdoors – highlighting the benefits for health and well-being.
  • Feedback is overwhelmingly positive, with users describing Greenways as clean, safe and beautiful. The small improvements people ask for are practical – things like more bins and toilets.

Why it matters

Since the MOVE Project began in 2023, Greenways have been recognised as vital public spaces – places that boost tourism, strengthen communities, support health, and benefit the environment. By capturing real experiences from users, we help ensure investment in Greenways continues to meet people’s needs and keeps improving year on year.
